Expiration Date, March 4th…

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted ~ Matthew 5:4

I can remember the events as though it were yesterday. About 7:27 in the morning I received a call from the hospital.  “I’m sorry but your dad has expired.”. I told the caller,  I didn’t understand what he was saying. “Expired?”

What was my father, some bad eggs or some old milk? I didn’t know that when he said my dad had expired, he was saying that he died. Once I realized what had just happened,  my anger turned toward the man from the hospital. I didn’t like anything he was saying so I simply hung up on him.

Well,  he may have passed away,  but he is not expired. I see him in so many of my ways and habits. I even see his influence on my love of writing and my love for reading.

My dad taught me how to read at the age of 3 years old. I was not reading ‘cat, hat, or  red’ but I could pick up any adult book at that young age and begin to read out loud without stumbling. I had pretty good comprehension of what I was reading and because of him I still have my joy for reading and my passion for writing.

But,  I stayed on punishment.  He was tough… no going outside;  I had to read a book and write a composition.  If he was really angry,  I had to do spelling, definitions and sentences from the dictionary.  Somehow, I kept being a smart mouth! Maybe he saw something in me then. ..

Today,  I won’t mourn. Instead,  I’ll celebrate his life. No more work today,  I’m simply going to find someplace quiet and read. I’ll write tomorrow.

The Joy of the Sign

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. ~ Matthew 2:10

When you finally see it! When the promise arrives.

Since childhood, I have travelled for Christmas. I say that I know Interstate 95 from New York to Richmond VA like the back of my hand.

Anticipation of great things are exciting. For weeks prior to the trip, there was shopping, packing, and planning all of the wonderful things that I would do with my family. It would seem like the actual travel date would never come.

On Christmas Eve, my mom and I, would finally get on the road. With music in the background, we would sing and talk for at least half of the six hour and half hour drive. We just couldn’t wait to get to Richmond to do this or that. Oh, the trip would seem to take forever.

Then finally, we would see the sign. “Richmond International Airport”. The weeks of preparation, the hours of driving were all wrapped up in the promise of the sign. We were arriving at the expected place, at the expected time.

I imagine the greater Joy the wise men felt when they saw the sign of the star. The years of waiting, for the promise, the preparation and the travel, to finally look up, and see that they were finally approaching the destination.

Now that I live in Richmond, I often tell my family that one of things I really miss about living in New York, is the joy and experience of travelling on the road to see them!

To quote my pastor, Bishop Michael B. Curtis, Jr, “The process of getting to your destined place is just as rewarding as the actual arrival.” I realize that I miss the process but I’m certainly grateful to be here with my family.

As many as are travelling on this Christmas Eve, I pray that your travels are safe and full of joy and anticipation. One more day until Christmas! Enjoy your coffee and power up your day!

No Anxiety Zone

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God ~ Philippians 4:6

What is on your mind this morning? With Christmas being a week away, many of us have the same thoughts, bills, gifts and more bills. Children have already made their requests known to us. But this scripture implores us to make our requests known to Him.

Prayer ~ Talk to God about everything that causes you to be anxious. He does not want you to carry a load of worry.

Supplication ~As we go to God, we are to be humble and willing to accept His will in our lives. His answers do not always come in the packaage that we expect, but His will for us is always good.

Thanksgiving ~  Being thankful is more than a feeling of gratitude. With thanksgiving, we tell God that we are thankful. We give Him thanks with our mouth and our actions.

Has any anxiety presented itself to you this morning? Grab it by the hand and give it over to Him with prayer, supplication and thanksgiving.

Enjoy your morning coffee and power up your day with prayer.

Quiet Time

Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. ~ Mark 1:35

There is a special time, before the sun rises, when the earth seems to be perfectly still. If you are an early riser, you kmow this time of solitude. It is the quietest time of the day.

This is a purposeful time of morning. We have to get out of the bed ‘on purpose’ and intentionally experience this quiet time. This is the same time that we wake up ‘too early’ and make the decision to go back to sleep. The bed never feels better than it does during this early time.

Jesus valued this special time. He got up early, long before the daytime. His disciples were likely still asleep. The crowds that usually pursued Him were probably still asleep. Before the noise of the day, He got up with the intention of spending quiet time with God.

Those mornings, when He wakes us up earlier than usual, let’s remember to rise up and enjoy the quiet time with God. Enjoy your cup of coffee and power up your day with quiet time.

Daily Direction

In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. ~ Proverbs 3:6

Weekends are great days for rest, but they are also great for working towards purpose. Without intentional direction, we can find that our weekends have little structure. Before we know it, it will be Sunday evening.

Let God structure and guide your day for maximum potential. Seek Him to direct your paths. Enjoy your coffee and power up your day.
