Mindset to Finish – Knowing the Purpose

Finishing is better than starting. Patience is better than pride. Ecclesiastes 7:8

It is the first day of February and I am already thinking about the end of the month. January was a great start to 2017. The momentum is still here, but there is much to get done.

I am starting two things today. The first, I am beginning a 10 day consecration with my church family. The second, I am starting a stretch with a goal of writing 3,000 words a day. Neither of these are impossible to complete. And difficulty will only come in if I don’t begin with knowing the purpose.

What is the purpose?

The purpose of the 3000 words a day, it is not to finish the book. The purpose of the 3000 a day is to instill commitment, structure and discipline into a book that is purposed to minister to every reader.

The purpose of the consecration is not to ‘get through it’. The purpose is to expose and break down the strongholds in my life that have continued to block me from my purpose.

The mindset to finish

There is a purpose to everyday we live and every task we begin. When we know the purpose of anything, then we know the value of it. Let’s develop the mindset to finish and accomplish the goals and tasks of each day.

As for me, I am letting go of my coffee and tea for the next ten days. Enjoy a cup for me and recharge your day.

Control the Controllables

My mornings at work are organized. The first thing I do is pull up my to do list. It is full of reports that I must complete daily, weekly and monthly. As I go through my morning, I check off the list as I go, making sure that nothing is missing or broken. As much as possible, all reports are completed before my calendar fills up with meetings and my inbox is filled with emails.

There are reasons why I have to stay organized. I learned some time ago that management may need information from me at any given time. Sometimes I will receive requests for information on data from 6 months or even a year prior. There is little room for error.

But there was a time…

There was a time when I did not use the list. I relied on everything in my head. I thought, ‘I do the same thing daily, I should know this by now.’ I would spend five hours trying to complete the same items that I now complete in two hours. My thoughts were scattered, I was distracted by meetings and inboxes. I would leave my desk, come back and not remember where I left off work.

The best days at work now are when the boss sends me a request for information and I have it back to him within minutes.

I fought against structure

My dad was ‘a list’ person. Every morning and afternoon, there were to do lists on the table of chores and homework that I was expected to complete. I did not realize that back then, he was teaching me structure. I remember how I used to cringe to see those pieces of paper on the kitchen table!
Funny, the things that I tried for so many years to run away from, are the very things that I now crave to have in my life. Organization, time management and structure are all important components that I need in order for me to excel to next level ministry.

I used to believe that to do lists and structure were items to try to control my thoughts and actions. I thought that they took away from my freedom and creativity. I have learned that what structure takes away is random thoughts, wasted time, incomplete projects and feelings of frustration.

I have learned this, structure is part of the path to reaching purpose. Take control of the controllables. Enjoy your coffee and power up your day!

Post Your Wins

I recall the old days; I meditate on all you have done; I reflect on your accomplishments. ~ Psalm 143:5

The administrator of a Facebook group asked us to ‘post our wins, no matter how small’. To start the conversation, she posted a comment on one thing that she accomplished that week. Someone followed with a accomplishment, then another. I took notice of ‘no matter how small’. Well, I did my daily blogs, I went to work every day…hmmm I had a couple of successful coaching sessions. Oh, and the magazine this published week!

The Purpose of the Post

This was not a bragging post. It was designed for the group members to focus on the positive so that we would continue to move forward.

In our last leadership meeting, our pastor Bishop Michael Curtis Jr., presented us with the Power of Positive Thinking (Barbara Frederickson, UNC). To quote the study,

“feelings of positive emotions helps you to identify more possibilities and options in your life”
and
“extra possibilities and options seem to translate into action”

Get Unstuck

When we don’t see large wins, it becomes easy to dismiss our smaller accomplishments. But acknowledging what God has allowed you to complete this week may be what is needed to push you towards your purpose.

Don’t wake up worrying about what you did not see accomplished. Think positive, celebrate your wins and continue to move on Purpose!

Wake up to Purpose

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, For the help of His countenance ~ Psalm 42:5

The best part of waking up is.. well it’s waking up.

Everyone does not have this joy. I remember when I went through a long bout of depression. For years, I would hope that would die. I despised waking up in the morning. The enemy had my mind in such a stronghold, that I thought that God was punishing me for keeping me alive.

If you are waking up feeling anything like that, recognize it as a trick.  If the enemy of your soul wants you to feel like you do not want to live, it is because he does not want you to live to fulfill your purpose. The enemy will use depression, and anything else,  to try to destroy your hope and your purpose.

This morning, if you feel anything but joy, shake it off. You are blessed to be alive and to have another day to walk toward your purpose. God knows the plans that HE has for you. It is up to us to wake up and embrace His plans for us to prosper to have hope and a future.

Don’t wake up worrying. Praise God through everything. Enjoy your coffee and power up your day!

A Mind to Work

So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work. ~ Nehemiah 4:6

‘Good’ teams work together.  ‘Great’ teams work together for a common purpose.

Many of us like to work alone, but collaborations are powerful.  Remember the tower of Babel? The people built together with the purpose of reaching heaven. God stopped them saying “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.”

God shows up when there is agreement.

Your group may be small or large. But there is power that comes from being on one accord, working for the same purpose. Power and promise arrived in the upper room when the people were of a like mind (Acts 2:1) . Whether it is to bless (Matthew 18:19) or to halt (Genesis 11:9) we can see that God shows up in when there is agreement.

Check your team

Today’s lunch was all about team building. For ninety minutes, we came together, for the same purpose. We left the meeting as a stronger unit, because we went in with the same purpose.

Take a few minutes to see who you are working with. Whether it is collaboration, project or even work or church, be sure that everyone is working towards purpose.

Work together purposely and enjoy your tea!

Purposeful Creation

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. ~Ephesians 2:10

I work with and I know many creative people: authors, poets, artists and musicians to name a few. I enjoy and appreciate reading their work, listening to their music, etc. because I know that the finished product is a result of hours or days of their creativity.
We are also finished products, the result of the thought and love from our Creator. We are the workmanship of God, created on purpose. We are here on purpose and here for a purpose. The task that we have is to identify and to walk in our purpose.
As we begin our day, let us remember that we are the purposeful creation of an awesome God.
Be encouraged. Be creative. Enjoy your coffee and power up your day!

Opportunities

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. ~ Galatians 6:10

This past weekend, much of the east coast was turned into a winter wonderland. Even in the south, snow and ice caused many places to close. For safety’s sake, there were many churches who made the decision not to open.

What an opportunity!

Churches who’s doors were opened, streamed their services live. Others made use of conference calls to keep the congregations together. I witnessed first hand, because of the outreach, were the many visitors who joined in the live streams and calls. My church alone had a large amount of visitors who called in from several different states.

In every situation, remember the opportunities that come with fulfilling your purpose. Sometimes, things are shaken up just to show us how much more we have inside of us.

Be safe and stay warm this morning. Enjoy your coffee and power up your day.
