Having a New Mind in 2018

The scenario…I was at my last job for eight years. For eight years, I signed into the company system using my same login info, only changing my password during the required times.

I didn’t pay much attention to my login routine, until now. I’m at a new job. And every time that I go to login, I automatically begin typing in my login from my former job. Of course, the login that I used prior just dies not work at my new job.

This morning I realized that there was a lesson in my sign-in issues. Although I’m in a new place, my actions and my mind are still in the old place. Eight years vs one month in the new.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 12:2

There is a transformation that has to take place in my mind. My mind has to be changed on purpose. If not, I’ll be typing in the wrong thing for weeks, or maybe months.

On the surface, it seems like it isn’t a big deal. I can always change what I type. Except each time that I use the wrong login, my mind automatically goes back to my old place, instantly visualizing my old desk and computer. Each time I do this, my mind is in the old season instead of my new season.

What worked in the old place is not designed to work in the new place. When we find ourselves doing the same things, but failing to produce results like we used to, it is possible that God has moved us to a new place but our minds and actions are reflective of the old place.

It is the season of change. We have crossed into a new year. What worked in 2017 will not necessarily work in 2018. In order to access and unlock the full potential of this year, we must transform our minds to be renewed and in tune to what God has for us in this season.

It doesn’t matter if I type in the login to my old job one time or one hundred times. The old way will not work in this new place, period. Old habits won’t work in this new season. Old thought patterns won’t work in this new season. Old interactions won’t work in this new season.

Have you identified your new place or your new season? Are you bringing the old mind with you or will you intentionally transform and renew your mind?

Here’s the same scripture in the Message version of the Bible…

Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
Romans 12:‬2 MSG

Let us transform our minds so that God can bring out the very best in us.

  1. Acknowledge the new season. You must first recognize that your old methods are not working.
  2. Seek understanding on what is required of you in the new season. Sometimes dieters will call this ‘reaching a plateau’. Understand and calculate the changes that you must make in order for you to successfully arrive at your new destination.
  3. Control your thoughts! Have you ever told yourself, I’m not going to think about ‘this’ right now? If so, then you successfully controlled your thoughts. Take charge of your mind that you don’t revert back to old methods.

Are you in the Greater Richmond VA area? If so, I extend to you a personal invitation to join me in worship this Sunday at The Sanctuary RIC.

Would you like to know more about Christ? He freely gives us the power to transform our minds and actions. Leave a comment, email, or inbox and I will reach back out to you right away.

Renewed Mind. New Year

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will ~ Romans 12:2

When we decide to lose weight, one of the things we must do is change the way we think. There are times where we think we can’t eat healthy food (because we want something fried, sweet or unhealthy) or we don’t have time to exercise.

Changing the way we think about the food we eat and exercise isn’t an easy task but with God we can do all things.  If you begin to crave a candy bar, chips, ice cream or anything unhealthy ask God for help to get through the craving.   Cravings can last up to 30 minutes or longer.

Remember, all things are possible with God. Power up your day!

Enduring Faithfulness

For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. ~ Psalm 117:2

The LORD is awesome!

Last night, for New Year’s Eve service, we  (my church, The Sanctuary RIC) prayed for our families. We prayed for healing and full deliverance for our families and ourselves. I specifically cried out for my sister. She has been ‘away’ for a few months. I also specifically cried out for my cousin. She had a stroke a few days ago.

By the time I got home last night, my cousin was on Facebook. She is talking, typing and doing well! And when the phone rang at 7:15 this morning, my sister was on the other end of the line. “Come get me, I’m free.”

“Wait, what? I’m on the way!”

I read a passage yesterday (I don’t remember the site) that simply said that our prayers are not words to try to convince God to do something for us. He already knows what He has promised to us. When He says that he is faithful, He really is. The last time I saw my sister, she looked near death. This morning she looked happy and healthy. Her life was preserved and I am believing God for her complete freedom.

In every situation, remember the faithfulness of God. He has not forgotten His word and you don’t have to convince Him to love you. He already does.

Happy New Year! Enjoy your cup of coffee and power up your day!

A Great Ending

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.~ Ecclesiastes 7:8

When I lived in NY, I attended Love Fellowship Temple, pastored by Bishop Hezekiah Walker. One of the ministries that I served on was the church choir. During one rehearsal, (there were many) I recall him having us go through the end of a song over and over. We were dragging at the end of the song, just to get it finished. He taught us how to put just as much energy into the end of a song because the end is just as important as the beginning and the middle.

Remember all of the lessons learned, the people met and the people released, the dreams pursued, and the businesses started.  Remember every experience where God has kept us. To sum it up, We came out of 2016 better.

Yesterday, I recorded a video on FaceBook Live, titled “What if?” It was a reflection of 2016 and of life questions.

Today, I am going to move with intention. I don’t want to rush through the day, just to get to the evening celebration. I want to intentionally enjoy this day that God has blessed me to see. The beginning was good, but truly, the end of 2016 is better!

Where did the Time go?

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalm 90:12

The last Friday of 2016. Where did the time go?

I’ve been asking myself this questions since just before Christmas.  Where did the time go? The end of the year seemed to appear out of nowhere. One more day and we are moving on to a New Year.

Time is our precious commodity. The scripture is a reminder for us to apply our days with wisdom. And where time-management may be an issue, pray for wisdom in this area.

I don’t want to get through half of 2017 and say ‘where did the time go!’ To quote my pastor, Bishop Michael B. Curtis Jr, “when we don’t plan our time, we give room to the enemy to distract us from our resource of time.”

This morning, I am not just thinking of how to be a better time manager, but I am praying for his instruction and for wisdom throughout 2017.

A Year Crowned with Goodness

You crown the year with Your goodness, And Your paths drip with abundance. ~ Psalm 65:11

What a year! 2016 has been filled with emotions, hard truths, ups and downs. From our personal lives, to our cities and even national and worldwide, there have been changes.

My relationship with God changed this year. He did not change, but he allowed my situations to change me. My faith in Him has increased. I look for His hand now. I pray and seek His face now more than ever. Where I saw Him as a distant God, I now know Him to be the mender of my broken heart.

This year was crowned, or ‘surrounded’ by his goodness. And by His grace, so shall 2017. Don’t go into the New Year with worry. Trust in His goodness and that the path He leads you on, will be abundant with purpose.

Let’s go into the New Year strong. Enjoy your cup of coffee and power up your day!

This is What I Know

I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread. ~ Psalm 37:25

If I had to describe this year in one word it would be “Uncomfortable.”

By no means do I mean this in a negative way. As I reflect on 2016, I can say that I have been in some uncomfortable positions. I can go down the list, finances, relationships, family, health, work…you name it. Every uncomfortable place had a purpose in my life.

My 2016 lesson: If I am comfortable, I am most likely not in the right position!

No matter how uncomfortable things may feel we know that God does not forsake the righteous nor will he have us in the position of lack. He does use situations to shift us into purpose.

Remember what you know. Trust God without worrying. Enjoy your cup of coffee and power up your day!
