The Run-Walk-Crawl to Victory

If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward” – Martin Luther King Jr

Dr. King showed us 3 wise choices… Run, Walk, or Crawl

This morning, as I begin my new week, which is full of hope and possibilities, I am ready to take off running.

It sounds great, except I feel this way almost every Monday. Yet by the end of the week, I’m exhausted, mentally and physically beat, and more discouraged than encouraged. Things get accomplished but not everything, and not usually with ease.

The Holy Spirit gently reminded me this morning that I am not a runner. Just as I move at slower paces in my body, I work best when I operate at slower paces in the Spirit.

Also it is not good for a person to be without knowledge, And he who hurries with his feet [acting impulsively and proceeding without caution or analyzing the consequences] sins (misses the mark). PROVERBS 19:2 AMP

In other words, If I apply the knowledge and direction that God freely offers, I can make it to the finish line without being overwhelmed, exhausted or mentally/ physically defeated.

Last night, I made my weekly checklist. Today, I begin to execute with His grace and wisdom.

And as for running through this week, I will remember these the lessons from Dr. King…

  1. It’s okay to move at your best speed. I won’t unfairly compare my speed with others. When I go at my best pace, there’s a better likelihood of me reaching my goals.
  • You don’t have to stay at the same speed. I have different levels of energy at different times of the day, evening and week. I will stop expecting to have the same output at 11:30 in the evening as I do at 11:30 in the morning. I’ve tried, it leaves me exhausted with bouts of insomnia. Instead, I will capitalize on my best times and move intently on my slower times.
  • You move to victory, victory doesn’t move to you. Keep moving and make every move toward victory. If not, I will be standing still or going in circles in the wilderness.

The great thing about new mercies, is the opportunity to get it right today. So even though I ran in circles in the wilderness last week, and I didn’t accomplish everything I set out to do, today is a new day.

And in the words of one of my favorite pastors, Bishop Hezekiah Walker, “I do believe I’ll make it”.

Task Masters ~ 5 Steps to Accomplish This Week’s Goals

Commit your works to the LORD And your plans will be established.~ Proverbs 16:3

Happy Monday!

Take a moment and pretend it is Friday afternoon. Imagine that the work week is over and you are ready for the weekend. You feel awesome because everything that you accomplished everything that you wanted to do. Nothing was too hard for you. God gave you the strength and endurance to jump every hurdle and ignore every distraction. You feel empowered, you learned, and you grew in grace.

That sounds like a great Friday so let’s go ahead and jump into this week.

Five Steps to setting and fulfilling our goals for this week

1. Write out Friday’s Victory list today. This list will include everything you believe that you will accomplish this week. Keep the goals reasonable but don’t be afraid to have to push for them.

2. Write out your schedule for the week. Include your work, church, and family time. Highlight those times and activities. Fill in empty spaces to schedule your time to work on specific tasks.

3. Track your Successes. Check off each success. Check off each task that you fulfill. You are winning ‘victories’

4. Talk about it. Find an accountability group or coach. Who are you going to be accountable to? Who will celebrate with you? Who will give you a pick me up if you get discouraged?

5. Start right now. Don’t wait. Download this free goal setting list and start writing

Goal Accomplishment and Task Checklist

Of course, I recommend this while you are enjoying a cup of your favorite coffee. Power up your day. I am believing God for us to have successful week!

I am Fighting Today

Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses ~ 1 Timothy 6:12

Believe it or not, I almost didn’t blog today….

I have been in my emotions this morning. That usually does not turn out to be a good thing. And that would be why this blog is late this morning. I usually try to find something encouraging to say. My emotions told me there was nothing special to talk about today

Then I had to think a little more…

The truth is, most of us have those moments. The feeling comes and we are ready to give up and walk away from everything. It is not necessarily because anything is wrong but simply because of a mood.  Well, let me call it what it is, a stronghold. For me, that feeling is usually the first steps toward depression.

Now that I have identified what the real fight is, I turn to the scripture, Fight the good fight of faith. We were called to this life of purpose. We fight with faith because our faith is stronger than the strongholds that come against it. Our faith knows to rely on the strength of God’s power even when our spirits are ready to give up.

Fight the good fight

All week, we have talked about having the Mindset to Finish. I encourage you to keep the mindset to finish, to fight the good fight of faith, and to continue to walk in you purpose.

Last day of consecration today; 10 days without coffee. I will be back on tomorrow, but enjoy your coffee and Power up your day through faith.

Mindset to Finish // Part 5

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,  redeeming the time, because the days are evil. ~ Ephesians 5:15-16

Unfinished tasks and goals will almost always end in missed opportunities.

About two years ago, I went into a car dealership to inquire about trading in my car. I test drove a gorgeous Malibu that had every bell and whistle I wanted. Unfortunately, my current car was ‘underwater’. The costs that would come from trading that car in would have placed me in a financial noose.

I was given advice: open an account with the credit union, keep the account active and in good standing, and pay my bills on time as much as possible. After a year, I would be in better financial shape to trade in my car..

A year later, I spoke back to the dealer and he asked if I had followed the steps. I told him no. He stated ‘Imagine if you had started a year ago and finished the plan, you could be driving the car that you want.’

Not only did I not have the mindset to finish, I did not even have enough faith to get the process started.

No more excuses

We can redeem our time with excuses or we can redeem our time by finishing the goals before us. I redeemed my time with excuses.

I cringed at the advice because one year seemed to be too long of a process to get a new car. In the two years from that conversation I did not finish the process laid before me. I held back my own progress. I kept my financial situation in bondage. I stayed in my underwater car. All because when I received the good advice, I did not grasp the mindset to finish the process.

Today I encourage each of you, and myself, to keep the Mindset to Finish. Let us be wise with our time (there’s that time-management again) and faithful to fulfilling our purpose.

Mindset to Finish // Part 4

Always set an example for others by doing good actions. Teach with integrity and dignity.~ Titus 2:7

I had no idea that having a teenager was so involved.

Last weekend, my 16 year old niece moved in. Yesterday I took her to school in the morning. This morning, I forgot all about her having to go to school! As I was almost ready to walk out of the house for work, I noticed that she was almost dressed. I asked her where was she going this morning. she gave me a strange look and said ‘school’.  I thought, ‘how did I miss that?’ I have to take her to school every morning now!

When we pulled up to the school, I clearly heard the Lord instruct me to have prayer with her. Now, I have heard preachers and teachers say to pray with your children before school, but I never had to do it since I don’t have children. I stopped the car, turned off the music and we prayed. To my surprise, she was very receptive to praying.

I know the role of the cool auntie, but the role of caretaker is completely new to me. I have a 16 year old who is watching my words and my actions. What I do now, has a greater impact than it ever did before. Last night, she asked me how the writing was going with my latest book. Now I realize I need to give her updates every day. I want to set an example for her and show her that I have a mindset to finish this book on schedule.

We are all somebody’s example

Have you ever heard people say, ‘What you do is not necessarily for you, but it is for you to be a witness for others’? Every day, we serve as beings a part of somebody’s great cloud of witnesses. Good or bad, our actions set an example that somebody will follow.

Today I am doing a more thorough examination of myself. What example am I setting when I don’t complete my tasks? What name do I give myself when I don’t keep my word?

Just a few morning thoughts. Still on consecration without my coffee, and I am surviving.  Enjoy your coffee and Power up Your day

A Mindset to Finish / Part 3

So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. ~ 2 Corinthians 8:11

Three years ago, I walked/jogged in the Monument Avenue 10K  (6.2 miles) race in Richmond VA. There were two things that I wanted to accomplish that day. The first, that no matter how tired I was, that I would run across the finish line. The second, was that I keep up enough of a pace that I would not be the last person to cross the finish line.

Sounded good, but I was slowing down by the time I reached the halfway mark. And there were a lot of people who started behind me that were easily passing me by. Some were walking, others were running and I was pushing through with everything that I had. It was discouraging. I imagined myself being on the news as the last one to finish.  I wanted out but there was no turning back either.  As much as I wanted to stop the race, the only way back to my parked car was to get across the finish line.

Push through to the finish

When we have a mindset to finish, we push through. Even when it seems like we are slowing down. Especially when it seems like others are prospering further than we are. Push through anyway.  Life is not a group project and we must complete our own individual assignments.  I was ready to quit the race because I was more concerned about other people passing me by.

Defeat begins with the thoughts in our mind.  Therefore, it is necessary to keep our thoughts directed towards the joy of completion.

I made it across the finish line.  About 100 feet away, I broke out into a sprint. The camera’s snapped the picture of me running across! Can you imagine the joy I felt in completing the race? I did not come in last. But at that point, it would not have mattered. I was just thrilled to have finished.

Finish this day well. Enjoy your coffee and power your day with a mindset to finish.

Starting With Nothing

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand. ~ Zechariah 4:10

Going forward when you are starting with nothing

For just a few moments today, I got into my feelings. My phone rang with an all too familiar 800 number, followed by an 866 number. Yes, my overdue bills were chasing  me down.

In all honesty, a bit of hopelessness came over me.  But you know, I am not one to quickly give up. I have seen others pull themselves out of deeper holes than this.

Get a True Evaluation

When we feel like we are starting from nothing, we already feel defeated. Remove the emotions and get a true evaluation. We all have something, sometimes it is simply an idea. In my case, I needed to get a true evaluation of what I am working with. When I took a closer look, I found there was still money from my check that I had not touched yet. (You know this made me perk up)

Start from where you are

Who says that success is only defined when things happen suddenly or all at once? Sometimes that successful bank account, idea or credit score will come about only after weeks or months of consistent work. One step at a time will get you to the same destination as one giant leap. However, that giant leap will almost certainly rob us of priceless life lessons that we were destined to learn.

Look at the ant. Ants are small, yet in comparison, they are one of the strongest creatures on earth. It is okay to start small. It is okay to take small and directional steps toward your goal.

As for me, I am switching my mindset to have no more unanswered calls. Time for me to negotiate and pay these things off. I am looking forward to giving testimonies of payoffs!

Stay encouraged through everything! Enjoy your tea and recharge your day.

A Mindset to Finish / Part 2

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us ~ Hebrews 12:1

Over the course of my life, I have developed this thought, ‘if someone else can do it, then it isn’t impossible’. This train of thought has helped me to develop many skills. I will study, train and practice something and not become satisfied until it feels like second nature. I will watch how a ‘pro’ does a certain thing and know that if they learned how to do it, then so can I.

Keeping the Mindset to Finish

Most Mondays have a strong start. We know what we want to finish during the week. We know the goals and the commitments that need to be met. The challenge is to develop and keep this mindset throughout the week. Today, I encourage you to begin today with a mindset to finishing.

Identify your ‘Witnesses’

As in the scripture above, many people in the Bible were identified as being witnesses or examples of people who successfully overcame obstacles. We can use this same mindset to identify others who are successfully performing in the areas that we are trying to perfect.

  • Identify what you need help with in order to complete your goals this week. Is it getting started Is it developing structure? Or do you need help with just a certain area?.
  • Who’s example will you follow? Have you identified someone who has successfully completed the same goal(s) that you are looking to complete this week?
  • Identify when you will need help this week. Some need the push to get started, others need encouragement in the middle. Still others, need that push right at the finish line.

Still on consecration this week, so no coffee for me yet. I have survived the massive ‘detox headaches’ so I believe I can make it all the way through! I have a mindset to finish.

Enjoy Your Coffee and Power up your day!
